“Along with international organizations some countries must also take practical steps for settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict” OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier told Today’s Zaman, a Turkish newspaper. OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier in his interview to Today’s Zaman recalls occupation of an inseparable part of Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh and 7 adjacent regions in the 90s of the last century where ethnic Armenians were settled as well. According to him, a number of historical monuments have been destroyed as a result of the occupation which inflicted great damage to Azerbaijan. Underlining the importance of the conflict’s settlement based on the international laws and principles Mr. Zannier added that the problem’s soonest solution will secure peace and stability in the region. Touching on the negotiations held under the auspices of the OSCE he said that the progress was not happening: “I am stating a fact – the progress is not happening. Something is missing”. Mr. Zannier believes that Turkey could play an important role in the decades-long conflict in the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey is bordering both countries involved in the conflict. Turkey needs to create conditions to promote dialogue on both sides.
