Azerbaijan’s non-permanent membership to the United Nations Security Council is a great achievement. European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Philip Lefort said at a meeting at the Milli Mejlis.Speaker of the Milli Mejlis Ogtay Asadov said that Azerbaijan is interested in development of the cooperation with the European Union. Touching on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict the Speaker noted that Armenia had pursued aggressive policy against Azerbaijan for 20 years. Armenia ignores international organizations’ resolutions on settlement of the conflict. This country also distorts the negotiations process on the problem by different means. Ogtay Asadov stated that Azerbaijan is advancing in state building process and integrating into Europe and that it is necessary European institutions intensify their efforts for settlement of the conflict. European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Philip Lefort congratulated Azerbaijan on its non-permanent membership to the UNSC. He noted that this event opens new opportunities for Azerbaijan-EU cooperation. Philip Lefort also met with Head of the Milli Mejlis Committee on International Affairs and Interparliamentary Relations Samad Seyidov. Azerbaijan’s recent achievements were highlighted during the meeting. Mr. Lefort said Azerbaijan is an important partner for Europe and this country with cultural diversity has a special role in the region. As to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the diplomat noted: “We are for soon settlement of the problem”. He added solution of the problem will positively impact the development in the region. Samad Seyidov briefed the guest of domestic and foreign policy of Azerbaijan, the steps taken for Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, provision of human rights and freedoms as well as reforms carried out in various spheres.
