US Congressman Bill Shuster urged his colleagues in the House of Representatives to join the working group on Azerbaijan. The diplomat also congratulated Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of regaining its independence.

The American Congressman noted that Azerbaijan located in the geopolitically dynamic region between Europe and Asia it is a secular state with a Muslim population, and a home to Christian and Jewish communities. Azerbaijan and the US managed to build a strong partnership based on common interests such as global and regional security, energy and economic development, democratic reforms and respect for human rights. The Congressman noted that Azerbaijan has done much work over the past 20 years to consolidate its sovereignty and political independence of the country as well as to diversify the economy. Co-Chair of the working group on Azerbaijan in his statement highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in global energy security transporting energy resources of the Caspian Sea to the US allies in Europe as well as its active participation in international security operations. Mr. Shuster noted that it is necessary US to support the development of east corridor constantly in order to strengthen global energy security. The Congressman urged his colleagues in the House of Representatives to join the working group on Azerbaijan. At present, this group involving 40 American lawmakers is making efforts to strengthen Azerbaijan-US partnership and to promote US interests in the region.
