The Azerbaijani Diaspora in the US called upon President Obama and congressmen to celebrate the 28th of May as Azerbaijan’s Republic Day and to recognize Azerbaijan’s historic success as the world’s first predominantly Muslim secular democracy. The bulletins sent to the US elected officials say that in 23 months of its existence Azerbaijan Democratic Republic established secular democratic institutions, including the Parliament and elected multi-party representative government, secured country’s international recognition by the League of Nations and adopted universal suffrage law in 1919. This law granted uniform civic identity regardless of ethnic, racial or religious differences.
