OSCE PA President at MM

Being the region’s leader country Azerbaijan makes good contributions to in all spheres due to active participation in the OSCE PA, said Assembly President Petros Efthymiou during his meeting with Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov. Visiting OSCE PA President Petros Efthymiou first visited the tomb of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the Alley of Honor…. Then the guest visited the graves of those who fell for Azerbaijan’s independence and territorial integrity…… Welcoming the guest Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov said this visit would be a good contribution to deepening of the Azerbaijan-OSCE PA relations. He added that integration to the Euro-Atlantic space was one priority directions in the foreign policy of Azerbaijan confidently walking on the path of building a democratic society. In this context, the country has efficient cooperation with international organizations. Speaking of the role of the parliamentary diplomacy, the speaker stressed the importance of making good use of it. “It’s a great honor for me to make my first visit to Azerbaijan as OSCE PA President”, said Petros Efthymiou, adding Azerbaijan along with being an active member of the organization, also plays a big role in the region. That’s why I regard my visit to Azerbaijan as a visit to a very important country, he said. OSCE PA President praised the activity of the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation to the organization. Touching on the prospects for deepening cooperation between the country and the organization, he said there were good opportunities for this.

Then the Assembly President met with the Azerbaijani delegation to the assembly. Head of the delegation, Vice-Speaker of the Milli Majlis Bahar Muradova informed the guest about the history of parliamentarism traditions in our country, economic and social achievements, protection of human rights and freedoms, and actions taken towards democratization. Touching on the Daghligh Garabagh conflict, she said to achieve a fair settlement of the problem Armenia must liberate the occupied lands of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs must return to their homelands. Bahar Muradova and Deputy Head of the delegation Eldar Ibrahimov said that the Assembly alongside other international organizations should work out and adopt a draft resolution of the protracted conflicts, including Daghligh Garabagh. Moreover, a report should be rendered to the parliamentarians at the Assembly on the work done by the OSCE to settle the conflict.        

Petros Efthymiou touching on the settlement of the Daghligh Garabagh conflict in his speech, said that the OSCE was committed to solution of this problem peacefully in line with international legal norms and principles and the Assembly was open for a dialogue.  He added that there was sore need of stability in the region. This stability is useful not only for the peoples living here, but for Europe as a whole. Welcoming the idea of the organization’s making a report for the parliamentarians on the settlement of the conflict and keeping the lawmakers updated, he said in the sessions ahead he would try to realize it.
