April 4 is the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. This date has been observed by UN General Assembly in over 100 countries since 2006.

Since 2006 the Azerbaijan National Mine Action Agency – ANAMA has been observing April 4 - the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. The National Agency established under Great Leader Heydar Aliyev’s executive order in 1998 began operating in 2000. It has done a lot in increasing mine awareness, ensuring security. In 2004-2005 the Agency included mine awareness program in curriculum at secondary schools in frontline and occupied lands. Since 2007 this program has been taught at schools of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic bordering with Armenia. 65 thousand textbooks for pupils at some 1200 schools and 5 teaching aids for 2 thousand 335 were distribute in frontline areas. Over the past period the National Agency discovered nearly 450-500 mines and unexploded substances. Voluntary committees have been established in frontline regions. Mine action experience gained in recent years is shared at the international level. Presently, Azerbaijan practice is applied in Afghanistan. Last year, as part of President Ilham Aliyev’s non-military assistance to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan 10 thousand 500 books in the Dari language were published and sent to this country. Trainings were organized for 150 teachers from Kabul and other cities. Currently international trainings are held for Georgian specialists in Goygol region. Note that ANAMA has regional bases in Azerbaijan’s Fuzuli, Goygol. Agstafa, Terter and Aghjabedi regions.
