Azerbaijan is in a very important position as the international transport corridor between the east and the west. It plays especially the transit role. As a result of this policy calculated years earlier, today, our country both earns great revenues, and has become one of the significant countries in international cooperation. As President Ilham Aliyev has noted, 2019 was a more remarkable year in this regard:

"Baku-Tbilisi-Kars" railway has been constructed. This is our historical achievement. It is not because Armenia has remained in the eternal deadlock. However, it is also an important issue, as now, this road brings great revenues and expands international cooperation. This road has turned into a very significant infrastructure project for international cooperation, and Azerbaijan is the leading country here. We have played a special role in the creation of the East-West and North-South transport corridors. We are the country which participates in the both projects. The Alat International Sea Trade Port is the biggest sea port in the Caspian Sea."

Today, this sea port is the main part of the transport corridor between the east and the west, and it is no coincidence that in 2019, more than 4 mln tons of freight were transported at Baku Port. The biggest growth tempo was observed in the number of containers and wheeled equipment. It is a 57% growth compared to 2018.

The growth is mainly connected with the fact that trucks from Central Asia, Turkey and Ukraine preferred the corridor passing through Azerbaijan. The freight turnover is mainly carried out between the Black Sea countries and Central Asian countries. Transportations within the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route play an important role in the increase of containers. The volume has increased mainly at the cost of containers coming from China.

There are all the necessary logistical possibilities at Baku International Sea Trade Port.

One of the latest innovations at the Port is connected with the construction of a new terminal – grain and urea terminal. The project is expected to have a positive impact on the increase of transportations via the Silk Road Corridor.

There is a big volume of fertilizer-urea production in Central Asia, and it is exported to western countries. The construction of the analogical terminal is about to be completed at Turkmenbashi Port.

It is planned to build such a terminal in Baku as well to accept that freight and transport it to the west. Views are exchanged on the attraction of foreign investors to the construction of the grain terminal. The construction of the urea and grain terminal at Baku International Sea Trade Port will have an impact on the increase of transit freight passing through Azerbaijan.

Works are underway on the automation of Baku International Sea Trade Port and the digitization of the corridor. It means that the strategy of the port operations and business processes automation will be applied. The process will be completed by the end of this year. At the initiative of Baku International Sea Trade Port, appeals have been made to international organizations for the digitization of the corridor. Within the framework of the grant allocated by the OSCE, a project is being prepared in this field. The project strategy is planned to be completed in April of this year. Thus, Azerbaijan will strengthen not only in the transit via the Silk Road Corridor, but also in digitization and management.
